My Teaching Philosophy
Involve Me and I Learn
“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” This quote by Benjamin Franklin describes many aspects I believe are important when teaching, in just one sentence. As a prospective teacher I’ve been working diligently and hard at becoming the best possible instructor I could be for my future students. After observing in multiple classrooms during my studies, and teaching a variety of lessons, I know there is no other job I would rather have. The satisfaction of being able to see that I have made a difference in a student’s life is a feeling like no other.
As a teacher, I know I am not going to change the world, but if I am able to make a difference in just one child’s life then I know I am doing my job correctly. I believe teachers should be positive role models to students and should push students to follow their dreams, no matter how big the dream is. I am very passionate about teaching and I know that when I get a classroom of my own I will strive to make if the best educational experience my students will ever encounter. Benjamin Franklin stated in the quote, “involve me and I learn.” This statement is very important to me. I believe that every student has the chance to make a difference and succeed in whatever they set their minds to. Every student should have an encouraging teacher to provide them with the education and support they deserve, and I will be the teacher to provide them with this. No child should be forgotten about or left behind. I believe that success starts in early elementary years.
One of the most important components to being a wholesome teacher is having a good relationship and collaboration between teacher, students, and parents. I believe parent involvement is a crucial aspect in the classroom. I feel that teachers should get to know their students hobbies and interests in order to better relate to their students during instruction. Getting to know students can be done by interest surveys, a conversation with the student, and by getting to know their parents. Whether this is about home life, personality, or any type of medical condition a child may have, I believe this helps to ensure that the teacher is delivering the best education possible for each and every student. I also believe that technology, when used safely and professionally, is a great way to collaborate with students and parents. I believe in communicating with parents frequently to keep them updated on their child’s progress in the class and will keep parents updated through letters, a class website, phone calls, emails, and conferences. Providing an effective elementary education for students will prepare them for their successful futures.
My instruction is filled with workshop models that include lots of modeling, guided and independent practice. I also feel that peer-to-peer collaboration and many inquiry activities should be used to engage students. I highly encourage student’s discussion and will allow students time to discuss with each other during every lesson. I believe it is important for students to be able to collaborate with each other in other to hear other people’s points of view, build communication skills, and learn how to be independent from the teacher. Students will carry all three of these skills with them throughout their entire lives.
I enjoy incorporating literature into my lessons as well. I believe in incorporating literature in every subject and that a book should used for every lesson. While teaching, I believe that it is extremely crucial to be genuinely enthusiastic about everything you are teaching. I have a naturally enthusiastic personality and I am genuinely excited about every subject and lesson that I teach. Having such a positive personality can really help motivate students to want to learn. I am so excited for my future and am ready to show students that school can be a fun and educational environment filled with positive behavior and laughter.
