My Literacy Philosophy
I believe…
· Students should be exposed to great literature both in and out of the classroom.
· Students should be engaged in meaningful and deep conversations with their peers about literature.
· Literacy should be integrated into every subject.
· Teachers should be readers and writers themselves in order to model for students.
· Students should be given the opportunity to choose their own texts.
· Students should be exposed to different genres and books in order to broaden their horizons.
· Teachers should know the interests and hobbies of their students in order to be able to recommend new books and authors in order to motivate and connect with students.
· Teachers should be familiar with great children literature and know the books their students are reading. I believe this allows for deeper conferences with higher-order thinking questions in order to check for comprehension.
· The most effective way for students to become readers and writers is by having the time to read and write.
· Scaffolding is an essential part of literacy education. Students should be exposed to great modeling, guided practice, and have the opportunity to practice independently.
